Hamilton's 2026 pattern was qualify close, race forward, bank the big points, and in Barcelona it peaked: his first front row of the year converted into the maiden win of his Ferrari career, 19.561s clear of Russell. Silverstone showed the range of it (sprint pole and a double-podium P3), and Spa the rough edges: a lap-1 snap of oversteer at Les Combes tipped Russell into the gravel for a five-second penalty, and he recovered to P4 with an unsafe-release investigation on the same afternoon.
The season still sits on a foundation of conversions: the Montréal statement drive (P5 to P2, holding Verstappen to 0.508s), back-to-back P2s through Monaco, the Barcelona win, and relentless points everywhere. It leaves him second on 169 points, 31 clear of Leclerc and Ferrari's best-placed title hope, though Spa's clash was self-inflicted and his team-mate out-scored and out-qualified him again. With Antonelli clear at the front, the eighth title remains mathematics, not momentum.

His first season in red was an apprenticeship harder than either party expected: a sprint win in China the highlight of a 2025 spent wrestling a car built around someone else's instincts. The off-season's whisper from Fiorano was that the 2026 car, and its energy-management-heavy driving style, suited him from the first filming day.
The whisper was right. Thirteen rounds into 2026, Hamilton sits second in the world championship and remains Ferrari's leading points scorer, his own first win in red taken in Barcelona. At Spa he recovered to P4 despite a five-second penalty for a lap-1 clash that spun out Russell, the retirement lifting him back above his old team-mate into second overall, though the incident was a rare loss of composure.
